About Williams, Lewis and Allied families
The oldest known member of the Williams family, John Williams, served in the Revolutionary War. Although John Williams Revolutionary War pension states he served from New York, it is now believed he actually served in a militia unit commanded by Captain Outwater in New Jersey. We have been unsuccessful as of yet in finding the father of our John Williams. John had one son Williams Williams born 1791 in North Carolina. There is also a possiblity that John and wife Rebecca had a daughter named Lucinda who married John Wolfer. There is a John Williams listed in the 1810 Federal census in Cumberland county, Kentucky who had a son and a daughter of the appropriate ages to be William and Lucinda. The 1830 Federal Census of Tazewell County, Illinois had a John Williams of the correct age living next to John Wolfer and Joseph Williams. John Williams and John Wolfer purchased adjacent land grants in Harrison County, Indiana in 1836. Rebecca "Recker" Williams is living with Lucinda Wolfer and her family in the 1850 Federal census in Harrison County, Indiana. The death certificate of John H. Wolfer lists his parents as John Wolfer and Lucinda Williams. For information about Lucinda iand her family, please click on the link for the Wolfer family listed under useful links.
Both John Lewis and his son Richard Lewis had Revolutionary War service in North Carolina. The father of Richard Lewis's wife Lydia was William Field/Fields who was a well known Loyalist in North Carolina. The generations earlier than John Lewis, 1719-1802, are not confirmed but are believed to be correct by the Lewis Family researcher Michael McDowell of Evansville, Indiana who published at least 5 volumes on the Lewis Families of American.
